Three Sikhs on a Royal Enfield motorcycle fired at Jathedar Kirpal Singh, the head priest of the Akal Takht, Amritsar, his personal attendant Gurdev Singh, and a granthi, Harbans Singh, on the Ludhiana-Jagraon road. All three, who were seriously injured, were travelling in a car to Amritsar via Moga after attending a Bhog ceremony in Ludhiana. The driver of the car, Malkiat Singh brought them to the local Christian Medical and Brown Hospital at Ludhiana in the same car.

Rebels gunned down

Seventeen guerrillas were killed in a jungle shooting with the government forces at a rebel base near the northern coastal city of Mullaitivu. In addition to the 17 guerrillas , two of whom were said to be teenaged girls, one government soldier was reported killed and several others injured. Sources claimed the raid was on a temporary base used for preliminary training of recruits who allegedly were to get further training at camps in Tamil Nadu.

Accident at PM’s

A commando of the Special Frontier Force on security duty at the Prime Minister’s house is believed to have been accidentally shot and injured at 1, Safdarjung Road. Centre’s quandary

The Centre is said to be still on the horns of a dilemma whether to hold the Assembly elections before or after the Budget session. Elections are due for as many as 13 state Assemblies in the next four months, making it almost a mini general election. Andhra Pradesh, where the state Assembly has already been dissolved and elections are due latest by March, is said to be posing a serious problem to the Central Congress (I) leaders who probably want to postpone the elections to a later month.
