PRIME MINISTER RAJIV Gandhi has indicated that India had made “some headway” in its negotiations with China. He expressed satisfaction over the progress made in the talks with leaders in Beijing, but cautioned that the way towards a full agreement was “very long.” The PM also expressed concern over the continued militarisation of the Indian Ocean and said that India wanted the area to remain a zone of peace.
Sri Lanka Boat Row
INDIA IS UNDERSTOOD to have asked for the release of 17 of its fishermen facing trial in Sri Lanka and said that this would help settle the dispute over the seizure of a Sri Lanka naval patrol craft by the Indian Coast Guards. The Indian plea was made to the Sri Lanka High Commissioner Bernard Tilakaratna, when he called on the Foreign Secretary Maharaja Krishna Rasgotra.
Preparing For Polls
BANGLADESH MILITARY PRESIDENT Lt Gen Hussain Muhammad Ershad dissolved his council of ministers to meet the opposition demand for a non-partisan government to conduct parliamentary polls fixed for April 6. The dissolution of the cabinet coincided with the announcement of parliamentary elections by the Chief Election Commissioner. The opposition political alliances and parties have been demanding the dropping of ministers belonging to the pro-government party Janadal.
A New Lok Sabha
ON THE OPENING day of the newly-constituted House, all but 31 of the 509 new members of the eighth Lok Sabha took their oath. Pro-term Speaker Jagjivan Ram, asked the members to observe a minute’s silence “to mark the solemn occasion of the first sitting.”
