When Mayank Yadav burst onto the scene for Lucknow Super Giants he did rattle the batters with his high pace. However, his career has been curtailed by injuries. In the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy India did not have the same venom once Jasprit Bumrah was done with his spells. Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg would say once the bowlers get the IPL contract “everything falls out of the window.”
“He’s [Mayank Yadav] is injury-prone because he’s young. I’m looking at his first-class stat, he’s only played one FC game. So, he hasn’t played too much of the longer format as well. I think it’s just sheer pace with Mayank Yadav. There are a couple of other bowlers that are very similar to him that bowl 145-150-plus but I think with young Indian bowlers coming through they bowl that pace. Sometimes, they are thinking right, just bowl sheer pace, if I can get an IPL contract, I’m happy. The end,” Hogg said on hi YouTube channel.
“Once they get that IPL contract, everything falls out of the window. They don’t learn how to play the longer form of the game. They don’t know how to bowl within themselves, they don’t have that endurance factor. They haven’t been trained for that endurance factor,” he added.
Why Mayank Yadav wasn’t fast-tracked to Indian team after sensational IPL debut
In any past cricket season, the sight of Mayank steaming down the run-up while forever threatening to bowl 150 kph in the IPL, would have fast-tracked him into the next team headed to tour Australia.
But resisting that giddy temptation, the National Cricket Academy instead got him started on a roadmap where the pacer has to make a natural progression from white-ball to red-ball cricket. NCA’s targeted programme, saw him undergo a complete scan to ascertain his proclivity to injury.
For a bowler who isn’t used to bowling long spells, based on his injury record and fitness, the workload was increased gradually with NCA trainers identifying the areas he had to build on. And after missing out on action for the last three months, Mayank is now in India’s squad for the upcoming T20Is against Bangladesh. The NCA ensured that the shock of bowling in Tests won’t precipitate a breakdown on the field.
