The 13th game of the World Chess Championship 2024 between D Gukesh and Ding Liren ended in a draw, leaving the score tied at 6.5-6.5.

The 13th game of the World Chess Championship 2024 between D Gukesh and Ding Liren ended in a draw after 68 moves. With this result, the score remains tied at 6.5-6.5, setting up a thrilling finale in the 14th and final classical game. With one classical game remaining, both players have 6.5 points each. This means the championship is still wide open, and either player can clinch the title with a win in the final game.

Gukesh’s white advantage fizzles out

Gukesh, playing with the white pieces, started aggressively but couldn’t convert his early advantage. Ding showed why he’s the reigning champion by defending solidly and neutralizing Gukesh’s attack. The game eventually reached a drawn endgame, disappointing fans who hoped for a decisive result.

As the game progressed, both players found themselves in time trouble. Surprisingly, Gukesh, known for his quick play, used more time than usual. Ding was down to less than a minute per move as they approached the critical 40th move time control.

Endgame deadlock

After a series of exchanges, the game transitioned into a rook and pawn endgame. Despite having an extra pawn, Gukesh couldn’t make progress due to Ding’s active rook play. The players agreed to a draw by repetition on move 68.

What Gukesh needs to do to win the championship now

To become the youngest world champion in chess history, Gukesh has two ways:

  1. Win the Last Game: If Gukesh wins the 14th game with black pieces, he’ll reach 7.5 points and become world champion. This is the most straightforward way, but also the toughest, as winning with black against Ding is no easy task.
  2. Draw and Win Tie-breaks: If the final game also ends in a draw, the championship will go to tie-breaks. Gukesh needs to win the tie-break matches to claim the title. The tie-breaks involve shorter time controls, which might suit Gukesh’s dynamic playing style.

Tie-break format

If needed, the tie-breaks will happen on Thursday. They include:

  1. Rapid games (15 minutes + 10 seconds increment)
  2. Blitz games (3 minutes + 2 seconds increment)
  3. Armageddon game (if still tied)
