Vicky Kaushal recently recounts his experience of working under the legendary filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the shoot of the film ‘Love & War’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. He is known for his cinematic extravaganza due to super-size storytelling and a meticulous eye for detail in filmmaking. In an interview with ‘GQ India’, Kaushal reveals his awe at the intense focus and dedication from Bhansali that took him aback during this collaboration.
Kaushal says Bhansali is completely “zoned in” for each and every frame of the shot, as if he were capturing something immortal. He doesn’t just look after the acting- Bhansali, for his part, perceives each minuscule detail inside the frame-the light, the background elements, the way the drapes move. Kaushal says that such perfection encapsulates Bhansali’s style of filmmaking.
Contrary to the belief that Bhansali is a rigid man, Kaushal says that he is very receptive to ideas and experiments freely on the sets. Deeply involved with every scene and thinking of the present and the future shots, Bhansali is not closed to creative suggestions. Kaushal observed, “Bhansali is a complete slave to his craft. He gives himself completely to the story, and he remains as in character on the floor.” That was something that impressed Kaushal quite largely.
