EIGHT LAKH CITIZENS of Bhopal, victims of the worst disaster in the chemical history of the world, heaved a sigh of relief when technical experts announced that the air they were breathing was “absolutely safe.” The announcement that there was “no trace of toxic material anywhere” in the atmosphere of Bhopal was made four days after the poisonous gas leak at a Union Carbide plant.
Indian Trawler Sinks
India expressed “deep concern” over the sinking of an Indian trawler in Sri Lankan waters and told the Sri Lankan government to take greater care in dealing with what Colombo considers to be incursions. Colombo was also told not to fire on unarmed fishing boats. Sri Lankan High Commissioner Bernard Tilakaratne was told that any arrested Indian nationals should be released forthwith and due compensation should be paid.
Vajpayee Attacked
BHARATIYA JANATA PARTY president Atal Bihari Vajpayee was injured on the head, right arm and leg in a stone-throwing at Nandasan in the Mehsana district. According to BJP’s A K Patel, Vajpayee’s car was attacked when he stopped at Nandasan to inaugurate the election office of the party. Before he could get out of the car, it was stoned.
PM On Foreign Forces
PRIME MINISTER RAJIV Gandhi declared that India would not succumb to blackmail by any foreign power. He cautioned the people against designs of foreign forces to push the country towards dictatorial rule and censured the opposition for pushing a divisive and anti-national propaganda. Gandhi said, “Countries around us are succumbing to such economic, political and military pressures” and that they “must prevent dictatorship in India.”
