The second day of the South Africa vs Sri Lanka 1st Test match threw up plenty of newsworthy moments with the Proteas wiping out Sri Lanka’s first innings for just 42 runs as well as Marco Jansen’s career-best figures of 7/13.
Another incident which will stay in the minds of the fans will be South Africa captain Temba Bavuma’s leaping uppercut shot in the first innings that went for a six. The tremendous shot was excecated off the 42nd over bowled by Asitha Fernando who tried to catch the Proteas skipper off guard with a short ball.
Bavuma moved to his leg side to guide the delivery towards the off-side region but with the ball still rising, he leaped in the air and smashed the ball over the third man boundary. It was one of the shots of South Africa’s first innings, something that the commentators said would make a great picture.

Bavuma would go on to top-score with 70 runs, returning after missing last month’s two-test series victory in Bangladesh with an elbow injury, and was 24 not out at stumps in South Africa’s 2nd innings along with Tristan Stubbs on 17.
Aiden Markram scored 47 in South Africa’s second innings before being bowled by Vishwa Fernando while Prabath Jayasuriya took two wickets to reach 100 in his test career in only 17 tests and become the joint second-quickest to a ton of wickets.
Earlier, Sri Lanka would be shot out in their first innings for just 42 runs which is the tied-ninth lowest innings in test history and their own worse total by 29 runs after their previous low of 71 against Pakistan in Kandy 30 years ago.
It was also the lowest test innings total at the Durban venue, eclipsing the 53 scored by Bangladesh in March 2022.
