Andaz Apna Apna
‘ starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor is considered a cult movie today. Right from the film’s characters to the dialogues and scenes are remembered even today and are a part of the meme culture. But at that point in time, when it released, the buzz around the movie was pretty lukewarm. Many thought that the film was a flop. However, director Rajkumar Santoshi reveals that it’s just a misconception that the movie was a flop. The director opens up on what had really happened!
During a chat with Doordarshan, Santoshi said, “They just say that it flopped after release. People were just not aware about it. The publicity wasn’t done in a proper way and people were not aware that this was a comedy. People thought this would be a love story like Qayamat Se Qayamt Tak or Dil or Maine Pyar Kiya. The distributors were new so they didn’t release it properly. At the time of the release, Aamir, Salman and me, the three of us were not in the city so there was no premiere or anything. So maybe because of that, the film didn’t get a strong response upon release. People who watched it, they were loving it.”
He said that it would be unfair to use harsh words like ‘flop’. He added, “I wouldn’t use harsh words like it was a flop, it wasn’t a flop. It didn’t get the kind of response what we expected. Later, people started liking it. It grew with word of mouth and as it was growing with publicity, it was taken off the theatres because the distributors didn’t have faith in it. They thought it won’t work.”
The film-maker known also for movies like ‘Damini’, ‘The Legend Of Bhagat Singh’ among others, revealed if he’s planning a sequel to ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. “Too early to say. Let’s see. But, I am writing a comedy in Andaz Apna Apna’s style. This is the kind of experiment that you have to do, you don’t always know how it will turn out but I can assure that it will be entertaining. The working title of the new film is Adaa Apni Apni.”
