BJP president, A B Vajpayee, demanded that the Election Commission announce a firm date for the Lok Sabha polls as he feared the Prime Minister may convene an emergency Parliament session to amend the Constitution and impose a presidential system of government. The BJP leader claimed that the ruling party was sure to lose in the polls even if the Opposition failed to give a straight fight.

India Backs Yemen

India will assist the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen in oil exploitation and provide consultancy services in telecommunications, airport and harbour building and power generation and transmission. India will send experts to the PDRY for small-scale industries. Agricultural equipment and machinery will also be provided.

Top Secret Takedown

“Operation Greenstar”, the code name given to the surrender of the most wanted outlaw of Chambal valley, Ramesh Sikarwar, was kept a closely-guarded secret by the Madhya Pradesh police. Even the SP of Morena, where Sikarwar laid down arms along with eight associates, was not aware of it till the last moment. Laldenga’s Demands

Laldenga, president of the United Mizo National Front (MNF), will seek constitutional safeguards for Mizos to remain as “distinct people within the Indian union” during his forthcoming talks with the central government on ending insurgency in Mizoram. Two other major issues for discussion are the rehabilitation and resettlement of his underground followers and modalities of laying down of arms by them.
