Meher Vij has stated in a recent interview that although she has received critical acclaim from films such as ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan‘ and ‘
Secret Superstar
‘, the stereotyping of acting as a mother over and over stumped her.
“I have always felt the need to do a diverse kind of role.a little stronger. Something away from stereotypes,” she said during a talk with NDTV.
Meher Vij expressed her desire to avoid shallow roles after her work in Secret Superstar. She emphasized that she is not interested in playing certain types of characters and prefers to take on stronger roles that depict women in a more empowering light. This reflects her commitment to choosing impactful characters in her career.
Though her character in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ wasn’t a weak character, Meher Vij emphasized the need for female actors to break out of limiting roles and step into action or more complex portrayals.
She has another interesting anecdote from her part in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. She was doing an ad shoot when the casting director Mukesh Chhabra called her for that. When she met them, director Kabir Khan directly asked if the mole beneath her eye was natural or artificial. She never did know why, but speculated that it might be required for her character Razia, just that little something that she could have added.
It’s in this journey that Meher Vij hopes to inspire more women actors to step out of their traditional roles and work for strength and diversity in women’s portrayals on screen.
