A team of state government officials led by C V Subramaniam, senior advisor to the Punjab Governor, had discussions with the Sikh high priests, Akali Dal and SGPC functionaries on various issues, including the release of Akali leaders and others detained under the NSA. The discussions at Akal Takht are viewed as significant. They will hold another round of talks after the ceremony.

India Warns Pakistan

The Defence Minister, S B Chavan, warned Pakistan of a “fitting reply” in the event of any aggression. Addressing jawans and officers in Jodhpur, Chavan said. “We cannot remain unconcerned when Pakistan is arming itself to the hilt”. Chavan also accused some developed countries of providing classified information to Pakistan on India’s defence capabilities.

IMF Disappoints

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has returned from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings “totally disappointed”. In the face of opposition from industrialised countries to any liberalisation in financial matters, the only achievement India could make was to stall further reduction in the IMF access facility at the present level during the current year.

Map Of Khalistan

The self-styled leaders of the Khalistan movement in the US and Britain are apparently having a tough time at the hands of supporters who are demanding publication of the map showing boundaries of Khalistan. Sources, who do not want to be identified, say the leaders had promised them that Khalistan also includes areas of Pakistan that were predominantly populated by Sikhs before Partition and where some of the most sacred shrines of Sikhs are located.
