BENGALURU: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Sankara Guha Dwarakanath on Friday urged Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to play a bigger role in protecting doctors, one of whom was allegedly ‘gangraped’ in Kolkata, triggering widespread protests across the country.

Dwarakanath, a practicing doctor, in a letter, sought time with the Opposition leader for a team of doctors and industry leaders to discuss the issue and the way forward. “In the last decade, you have been an example and held your head upright fighting for the right cause and upliftment of women.”

He also urged Gandhi to press for a tough investigation and a special court to try the case besides helping to bring tougher laws. “This is not the first such case and as much as I don’t want to say it, but this will not be the last case. Unfortunately, elected representatives, administration and law makers haven’t learnt their lessons despite repeated such incidents. What is the way ahead for our daughters, wives, mothers who are risking their lives trying to relieve others of pain.”

The Congress leader also urged the Opposition leader to visit the family of the rape victim and give them courage to face the difficult times just like how he had been a ray of hope to the people of Manipur.

“I hope and pray that in these difficult times you will stand shoulder in shoulder with the doctors of India and send a strong message to protect us,” the letter said.
