As student protests reignited in Bangladesh on Aug 4, at least 73 people were killed, and hundreds were injured in clashes. Police used tear gas, rubber bullets to disperse protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The protests turned violent, leading to several deaths, prompting the govt to declare an indefinite nationwide curfew and announce a three-day general holiday. Meanwhile, India’s former High Commissioner to Bangladesh made shocking claims, stating that “the student protests have been infiltrated”. Harsh Vardhan Shringla also said that “the protests took a dangerous turn with the involvement of anti-national elements”. The student protests were triggered by the Bangladesh government’s decision to reinstate a 30 pc reservation for families of veterans of the 1971 war. The unrest is seen as Hasina’s biggest challenge in her 20-year regime, following her victory for a fourth consecutive term in January.
