Maheka Mirpuri
’s latest collection,
Passion in Patterns
, has brought back the retro era in fashion once again. The ace designer has taken an inspiration from the Hollywood film Grease and also the yesteryear Bollywood divas like
Dimple Kapadia
and
Zeenat Aman
, who continue to nail their fashion game.
Talking about her collection, Maheka says, “You will see a lot of colour, print and a lot of pattern.
There are over-sized dresses, it has got the exaggeration. There are some formals, some off-shoulder French organza tops, there are stickers on jackets, there’s crochet. The collection feels very Boho, hipster, retro…there are bell bottom pants, big zips. Overall, it celebrates the rock and roll era.”
About her inspiration for the collection Maheka adds, “It’s inspired from Grease.” The 1978 released American musical romantic comedy starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. She continues, “It was the time and age when people flaunted big hair, big earrings, big glasses. Also, Jennifer Lopez is someone I am inspired by and her music culture. In Indian cinema when I say retro I think of Dimple Kapadia and her film Bobby (1973) and even Zeenat Aman and her film Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971). I enjoy old fashion and it always comes back.”
At the launch event of her collection her friends from Bollywood including Gautami Kapoor, Bhagyashree and Manasi Scott showed up in retro looks. When asked Maheka if there are any Bollywood actors she would like to re-dress them in the retro look and she said, “Both Zeenat and Dimple still look so fab. They are still making fashion statements…I mean look at Zeenat on her Instagram, isn’t she fab? I would definitely like to style them in retro looks.”
