The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has issued notices to top state government officials for their alleged negligence in ensuring proper security measures in Jiribam, following the killing of a farmer which led to more than hundreds of families fleeing their houses due to alleged firing by Kuki-Zo militants.

The panel issued notices to DGP Rajiv Singh, advisor (security) to state government Kuldiep Singh, chief secretary, commissioner (home), deputy commissioner and SP of Jiribam. It directed the DGP to submit a preliminary status report regarding the prevailing law and order situation in Jiribam on or before July 11.

MHRC bench, comprising chairperson UB Saha and member KK Singh, issued the order after hearing a petition filed by Saikhom Kamala Kanta Singha of Silchar and Fanjowbam Lokenath Singha, a resident of Cachar, Assam.

The petitioner sought direction against Rajiv Singh as well as Kuldeip Singh for not providing compensation to internally displaced persons, who are the residents of Jiribam district, particularly the Meitei villages.
