The sitting vice-president and secretary are among three candidates in fray for the post of Mumbai Cricket Association president, election for which has been necessitated by the demise of Amol Kale.
The MCA has received three nominations from its current vice-president Sanjay Naik, secretary Ajinkya Naik as well as Bhushan Patil, who contested the recent Lok Sabha election on a Congress ticket against union minister Piyush Goyal.
The MCA will conduct its polls on July 23. Kale passed away in New York last month.
Sanjay, who had served as MCA secretary before being elected vice-president, said he was asked by Mumbai BJP president and BCCI treasurer Ashish Shelar to contest the election.
“Today I was asked to contest by our group leader Ashish Shelar, from the Ashish Shelar-Sharad Pawar group. We will take late president Amol Kale’s legacy forward and work in the interest of cricket in the city,” he said.
“An election was needed as per the new constitution. According to the old constitution, the vice-president used to be elevated if the top post fell vacant. We have got good feedback and the trust of our voters.”
Ajinkya said that he had spoken to former ICC and BCCI president Pawar and other senior members of the MCA, who advised him to contest for the president’s post.
“I spoke to Pawar saheb and there are other senior members and voters who came and said that I should run for MCA president’s post. I have been part of MCA for quite a while now and we wanted to carry forward pending work which our past president Amol Kale wanted to complete,” Ajinkya said.
