More than two weeks after three
truckers
from UP were killed by a lynch mob in Chhattisgarh, police made their first
arrest
in the case on Saturday. The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Harsh Mishra, a Raipur resident who works in a cement retail shop.
He was arrested from Borsi in neighbouring Durg district, police said. The incident took place on Mahanadi bridge near temple town Arang on the night of June 7.
A group of alleged cow vigilantes chased and intercepted a truck carrying buffaloes. The three men in the truck were thrashed on the suspicion that they were smuggling cows. Two of them died and their bodies were allegedly thrown off the bridge.
The third jumped into the river in a bid to escape. He died in hospital on June 18. “We can’t say yet whether any cow vigilantes or other groups are involved. Investigation is on,” said Kirtan Rathore, who is heading a 14-member team for the investigation into the incident.
