As the star turns a year older today, May 30, we look back at an old interview with his wife, Swaroop Sampat, in The Free Press Journal. She shared some anecdotes about their dating life. When asked who is more possessive between them, she revealed, that during their

courtship

days, Paresh Rawal was the possessive one and didn’t like it when she paid attention to anyone else. However, after many years together, he has become more relaxed.

She added that Paresh was very clear about his intentions from the start. He told her they would only get into a relationship if she planned to eventually marry him.
In the same interview, Swaroop Sampat shared that she had just finished school and was distributing brochures at an Indian National Theatre festival, where her father was the chief producer. At the same event, Paresh Rawal and his college friend were doing theatre. It was then that Paresh saw Swaroop and told his friends that one day he was going to marry her.
Obviously, everyone thought he was crazy and didn’t take his statement seriously. Swaroop Sampat further mentioned that Paresh, being a shy person, would watch her from afar at the theatre. However, a year later, she saw him performing at an inter-college competition and was impressed by his skills.
This was when she decided to approach him, even though everyone else was afraid of him because his character in the play was violent. Upon meeting Rawal, Sampat told him that she couldn’t believe anyone could be so good.
She recalled engaging in conversation with him. Eventually, he invited her to watch a movie and then expressed his desire to marry her, emphasizing the need for commitment. Despite her initial reservations, she agreed, thinking they would reassess later. As they collaborated in theatre, she observed their shared values despite their diverse backgrounds, noting her more westernized perspective. They tied the knot in 1987 and welcomed two sons, Aditya and Anirudh.
On the work front, after initially playing supporting roles, Paresh Rawal gained critical acclaim for his performance in the 1986 film ‘Naam.’ Subsequently, he became known for his versatility in both comedy and intense roles.
