In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Anupam Kher opened up about his glorious career of 40 years in cinema, with 540 films so far. The ‘Saaransh’ actor said, “All journeys should be beyond limitations; if it is within limitations, then it’s not a journey.
When you are static, my whole life has been full of unconventional choices.”
“I came to the city balding and thin, and I wanted to be an actor when hairstyle was much more important than talent. My choice of the first film was that of a 65-year-old man. When I was 28, I broke this myth of typecasting. I was doing a film called Karma, and I was doing Lamhe, so it has always been a different kind of choice that I have made. Then only you can survive for many years and still continue doing work.” Kher added.
When asked, he is intentionally picky about acting in Hindi films. Kher said, “No, with work comes work; choice is the luxury that people have when they have everything settled in their lives.” I was on the streets of Mumbai for 3 years, looking for work and sleeping on railway platforms, and I only told God, Give me work, and I would never say no to anything. But now I think that in the last 5–6 years, I have been a little, not choosy, and I want to do work that challenges me. So whatever work you will see of mine now, hopefully, will be a different kind of work; doing this film was also part of that strategy.”
Meanwhile, Kher announced his second directorial film, ‘Tanvi the Great’, on his birthday on March 7 this year.
