NEW DELHI:
Congress
and
Samajwadi Party
on Sunday demanded action from the Election Commission after a
video
showing a young man
voting
multiple times in UP’s Farrukhabad went viral on social media platforms.
The man, identified as Rajan Singh, can be seen casting mutliple votes for Mukesh Rajput, who is BJP’s candidate from Farrukhabad constituency, in the said video.
The Congress shared the video and urged the Election Commission to ‘wake up’ and take action. “Dear Election Commission, do you see this? One person is voting 8 times. Wake up now,” it wrote in a post on X.
Samajwali Party chief, Akhilesh Yadav, also shared the video and called for action from the Election Commission.
“If the Election Commission feels that this is wrong, they should certainly take some action, otherwise…BJP’s booth committee is actually a loot committee” he wrote in a post on X.
Meanwhile, the state election commission said that the accused has been arrested and repoll has been recommeded to ECI on the said polling station. Additionally, they have also suspended and initiated disciplinary proceeding against the officials of the booth.
Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of attempting to undermine the mandate by pressuring government officials to subvert democracy. “The Congress expects all officials on election duty to not forget their constitutional responsibilities in the face of power pressure. Otherwise when INDIA (bloc) forms the government, action will be taken so that no one will dare disrespect the ‘oath of the Constitution’ without thinking ten times,” Gandhi wrote in a post on X.
