RANCHI: Jharkhand’s jailed ex-CM Hemant Soren and his wife
Kalpana Murmu
Soren have reported a cumulative increase in their
financial assets
by around 200% in five years — from Rs 8.1 crore in 2019 to Rs 24.4 crore in 2024.
The
JMM
couple’s
income-tax filings
over this period show Hemant’s assets more than doubled from Rs 2.3 crore to Rs 5.3 crore. His businesswoman wife, a contender for the vacant Gandey assembly seat in the May 20 bypoll, saw her networth soar from Rs 5.8 crore in 2019 to 19.1 crore in 2024.
Details of their assets and liabilities became public after Kalpana filed her
poll affidavit
Wednesday.
Their financial details for 2019 were revealed when Hemant contested & won Dumka assembly seat that year.
Although the value of Hemant’s assets increased by Rs 2.7 crore in the last five years, his income was below Rs 1 crore during the same period. Similarly, Kalpana’s financial assets increased by Rs 10.3 crore, but her income during the five-year period was Rs 2.3 crore, according to their IT returns.
A close associate said Kalpana’s income was higher as she had been managing the family’s business while her husband focused on politics. “Hemant has been a politician with limited sources of income, but bhabhi managed their business well.”
