fashion designer
Ritu Kumar shared a throwback video on her Instagram handle featuring Sushmita Sen from her inaugural photoshoot post her Miss Universe triumph.
Kumar crafted attire for Sen during her US tour. Upon Sen’s return to Delhi, plans were made for a photoshoot at the iconic Taj Mahal.

As Sushmita’s photoshoot was set to occur outside the historic monument, the initially planned attire wasn’t suitable. The ace designer promptly opened her store in the early hours and crafted stunning pieces for the diva.
Ritu wrote, ‘When she landed in Delhi after the tour I got a frantic call to come to the Taj Palace. On reaching I learned that the team had scheduled a shoot outside the Taj Mahal the next day but the clothes they got sent were shorts and t-shirts – too skimpy to be worn outside a mausoleum! So, at night we opened up the store and located a pink sari and quickly altered a blouse. We also got hold of some other key pieces and within hours we were ready for the shoot.’

After the shoot was over, Ritu was over the moon as she received a lot of praise for her hard work and dedication. She added, ‘The shoot turned out to be hectic and poor Sushmita even fainted at one point but the images were worth our toils. To date, I think of her in that pink sari wearing a crown and the UP Police personnel around us clapping with pride! These images were splashed all over the country’s leading publications with credits to us and, more importantly, to the weavers.’
Undoubtedly, Sushmita is not only stunning but also an inspiration to millions. However, if you believe her beauty solely earned her the prestigious award, consider her remarkable responses during the final round of the competition. One standout answer, which garnered widespread attention, was to the question, “What is the essence of being a woman?” The 19-year-old eloquently replied, “Being a woman is a divine gift. Mothers, as women, are the genesis of life itself. Women embody love, nurturing, and the essence of sharing.”
