Prime Minister Narendra Modi raises the Amit Shah doctored video issue at a Lok Sabha election rally in Maharashtra

Delhi Police has asked Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to join its probe on May 1 in connection with a doctored video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah that is being circulated on social media amid the Lok Sabha election campaign.

Police have issued notices to five members of the Telangana Congress, including its chief Reddy, who posted the video on X, Press Trust of India said, citing official sources.

Reddy has been asked to appear with his mobile phone allegedly used for posting the fake video on X, the sources said.

The Delhi Police’s Special Cell registered an FIR on Sunday following a complaint from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the ministry of home affairs. The complaint concerned a doctored video of Amit Shah, wherein his remarks suggesting a plan to eliminate reservations for Muslims in Telangana were allegedly manipulated to imply Shah’s support for the abolition of all reservations.

The case has been registered under sections 153/153A/465/469/171G and 66C of the IT Act, the police said.

Amit Shah’s doctored video case: What HM actually said?

During a ‘Vijaya Sankalp Sabha’ in Telangana on April 23, Amit Shah said that “unconstitutional Muslim reservation would be abolished” if the BJP came to power in the state.

“I want to say this if the BJP forms a government then this unconstitutional muslim reservation will be abolished. These rights belong to SC, ST and OBC and it will be given to them by abolishing muslim reservation,” Shah said.

The home affairs ministry provided additional evidence, including links and handles from which the doctored videos of the home minister were being circulated.

After the case was registered, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit of the special cell began investigating the matter.

The issue was raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a Lok Sabha election rally in Maharashtra. “It is our responsibility to save society from fake videos; I request Election Commission to take action against those responsible,” Modi said.

The opposition, particularly the Congress, has launched an attack against BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of being opposed to reservation.

Reddy had previously said that when RSS was founded in 1925, it had resolved to declare the nation a “Hindu country” and to abolish reservations within 100 years, by 2025.
